Pine phytosterol belongs to the chemical family of sterols and includes stanols. Unlike the cholesterol found in meat and animal by-products (egg, milk), it is of plant origin. Because of its chemical structure close to that of cholesterol, phytosterol partially prevents its absorption by occupying its absorption sites in the intestine. Pine phytosterol helps maintain normal cholesterol levels.
